How to Persevere When You Feel Like Giving Up On Your Goal
The secret about success
Do you want to know what the most consistent predictor of whether or not someone will be successful is?
I’ll give you a hint: it’s not talent.
And, no it’s not who you know nor is it your intelligence.
It is your perseverance.
The consistent predictor of whether or not someone will achieve their goals, receive the accolades and amass the success they want is dependent upon whether or not they keep showing up, time and time and time again.
Here’s the thing, the universe counts on you to show up every single day and put in the work, while holding the vision of the outcome you want. When you’re told no, when you’re rejected, when you’re not seen, or even when you feel unmotivated, that is your chance to prove how much you want to achieve your goal.
Because the minute you decide that a bump in the road is the thing that will deter you from something that is supposedly your purpose in life, you affirm the theory that you truly don’t believe you deserve it as much as you say you do.
This is why passion won’t get you anywhere by itself…
You see, it’s easy to hold passion for a goal at first. When you first get the initial strike of inspiration, you’ll go hard toward your goal. Everyone does in the beginning. Passion runs heavy, excitement is there and inspiration has you damn near busting at the seams. No one can tell you anything because you have such tunnel vision.
But, what happens when you get hit with that first wave of rejection meant to test your faith. Passion must be accompanied by commitment and perseverance to truly sand tall in the face of adversity and rejection. Passion is like a child, excited and ready to take on the world, but like a child, passion must be looked after, accompanied with an adult to help it achieve large tasks. That adult? Your grit. You’re commitment. Your perseverance. You want to have passion, by all means, please do because I believe nothing worthwhile and nothing that is your true purpose will be without passion. But, passion can’t take you all the way there. The starry eyed dreams of passion must stay grounded in the grittiness of showing up each day to grind away on those magical visions.
How do you strengthen your grit and perseverance?
You want to know how you become someone who perseveres in the reface of adversity? You just do it. Yup, that’s it.
There’s no fancy magic equation for this. You must choose to show up each day. You must choose to get up and dust yourself off after a fall. You must choose your big vision over the disappointment of a minor loss in the process. You see, those who are strong in grit choose to see each rejection as a steer in another direction. A pivot. They choose to take lessons from their “failures” and adapt as needed. How do you strengthen your grit? You make the choice that you deserve the vision that’s only possible by you showing up every single day to do the damn thing.
Anyone who is successful in their field will tell you this: it didn’t happen overnight and it certainly didn’t happen because they chose to give up after being told no once. Often, behind every successful individual is a set of stories of failures, no’s, tears, pain and growth. However, these are the things that make for amazing stories once you make it.
These are the things that build character.
These are the things that make every single dream you’re building worthwhile in the end.
You came here to learn how to keep going when you want to quit. Here’s my advice, keep hold of your vision and rest when you must. But if the dream you are working toward is truly engraved in your heart the way mine is, you won’t ever quit, you’ll learn how to pivot, adapt and persevere through it all.
